Student Internships

The Dolphin Encounters internship program is designed for high school and college students interested in obtaining critical practical experience in the marine science field. Interns work directly with marine experts, educated researchers and animal care staff members, assisting with ongoing research projects, aspects of animal care and husbandry, guest relations, and day-to-day operations.

Program content is dependent on the time of year in which the internship is performed. Applicants can expect to be heavily involved in assisting trainers throughout the day with animal care and training duties. These duties might include: fish and diet preparation, pool maintenance, basic cleaning and record-keeping.

Internship spots are highly competitive since the number of interns is limited to each week throughout the year. One to two week internships are offered throughout the year and may be available for credit through an academic institution. Applications are accepted Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4:30pm. Bahamian labor laws prohibit intern programs from exceeding two weeks. Accepted non-Bahamian interns pay a fee of $250 a week. Bahamian interns may apply at no cost.

Dolphin Encounters does not provide housing; however the Internship Coordinator can assist interns in finding affordable housing in close proximity to Dolphin Encounters. All non-Bahamian interns under the age of 17 are expected to provide proof of housing with a parent or legal guardian while staying in Nassau during the time of the internship. If the applicant is associated with a school project, he/she must also include the requirements of the school program and/or the goals of the internship.

All applications are reviewed individually. Phone interviews are required for final applicants. Internships at Dolphin Encounters provide:

  • Valuable work experience and real performance reviews
  • Exposure to a variety of career interests, including education, training, public speaking and top-of-the-line veterinary medicine.
  • An opportunity for employers to select new employees with proven skills and interests
  • Work study credit or research project support.
